Still painting, layer upon layer, cleaning the roller and brushes inbetween each time I swap colours. White and green. Cloud and Kermit. Unsure of what this work will become. Should there be more chalkboard spaces? I love the impermanence and playfulness of chalk. What is the white space for? The ground of contrast? Or a work space for some kind of drawing to occur? A space for words, typographical jaunting?
I've done three layers of chalkboard paint now and my paint tray still has green in it. Wash it all out or paint another green square?
The White Space. It's what people see when they walk past the library and glance through the window. It's in the foyer which is the first space people enter when they come into the library. I'd love it to be something really interesting to look at, something creative that makes people slow their step to get a better look through the glass, or better yet stop and come inside. The concept behind "Opening Line" - the name of this project - was the first line of a book leading you into a space where unknowns and discoveries await and how this artwork, positioned as it is in the entrance into Carlton Library, can be the start of each visitor's experience of the library.
ReplyDeleteMy hope for the white space is that it will intrigue, inspire and warmly welcome visitors to Carlton Library. Books and reading is the theme. Opening Line is perhaps just the beginning.
